Lynne Spears, already grandmother to Britney's young sons, told the magazine: "I didn't believe it because Jamie Lynn's always been so conscientious. She's never late for her curfew. I was in shock. I mean, this is my 16-year-old baby."

She said her actress daughter, the telegenic heroine of her popular Nickelodeon series, has known Aldridge for years and began dating him in high school.

But in a recent interview with The Associated Press, Spears said she had no steady boyfriend. "I kind of just keep my options open," she said. "I have a bunch of friends that I always hang out with, a bunch of guy friends." She declined to talk about her older sister.

L.A. authorities investigating rapper Pimp C's death

Pimp C, one-half of hip-hop duo UGK, was found dead Tuesday morning in his room at the Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood. He was 33 years old.

Craig Harvey, chief investigator at the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, said the rapper's body would be examined Wednesday but a cause of death will likely be deferred pending additional tests. His officers were still at the scene Tuesday evening.

"At this time there's no signs of foul play," Capt. Ed Winter of the coroner's office told the Associated Press later Tuesday. "It appears to be possibly natural, but pending autopsy and toxicology we can't say the cause."

L.A. County Fire found the rapper, whose real name was Chad Butler, dead in his bed at the Mondrian after responding to a 911 call by hotel security. The hotel released a statement that Pimp C's family called and said the rapper was to have checked out the day before.

"Security personnel went to Mr. Butler's room and found him in bed, apparently expired," according to the hotel.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman said the death is being investigated by its homicide division.

A statement by Pimp C's publicist said his manager "is asking that everyone please respect his family and those close to him at this time and refrain from rumors and innuendo."

In Port Arthur, Butler's mother, Weslyn "Mama Wes" Monroe, said she spoke with her son by telephone last week and found him excited about his latest project, a collaboration with Oscar-winning rap group Three 6 Mafia.

"He was in L.A., doing what he loved most," Monroe said.

Pimp C's death follows a commercial peak for UGK. Its first studio album in five years, Underground Kingz, was released in August. The two-CD opus tallied six-figure sales and gave the group its first No. 1 album, behind the popular single and video Intl' Players Anthem (I Choose You).

The rapper had performed Saturday in Los Angeles with labelmate Too Short.

In addition to working with his UGK partner Bun B, Pimp C collaborated with rappers including Mike Jones and Chamillionaire. Those two took a Houston rap scene that he helped build to a national audience.

"It's a sad day in the city. A legend has passed," said Jones, who traded verses with Pimp C on 2006 single Pourin' Up.

UGK's breakthrough was a long time coming. The Port Arthur duo formed almost two decades ago when Pimp C left a group called Mission Impossible to work with Bun B. A Mission Impossible song, Underground Kingz, gave the duo its name.

Some underground tapes circulated before the duo recorded Too Hard to Swallow in 1992. UGK recorded several albums for major label Jive, while also working on locally-produced recordings, some with Houston's late, legendary DJ Screw. Though big success took years, UGK had venerable status among Southern rappers.

"Pimp C is a true legend. As far as the South goes, as far as Houston goes, he was the definition of a true pioneer," said rapper K-Rino, who also got his start on the local scene in the '80s.

"(Pimp C) and UGK came along at a time — with the Geto Boys — and really hit the underground and then the mainstream when groups from the South weren't getting exposure. They knocked down a lot of doors and let a lot of people shine."

UGK earned its first taste of A-list attention with a guest shot on Jay-Z's Big Pimpin'.

"I know a lot of guys that call themselves pimps, but he's a real pimp," said Brooke Valentine, a Houston-bred singer who featured Pimp C on her single Dope Girl.

The rough and tumble lifestyle that informed some of UGK's music was sewn closely to Pimp C's life. The group's rise after the Jay-Z collaboration stopped when he was imprisoned in January 2002 after falling behind on community service required after pleading no contest to aggravated assault.

His label painted a kinder portrait of the artist. "He was truly a thoughtful and kind-hearted person," said Jive Records president and CEO Barry Weiss. "I've known Chad since he was 18, and we loved him dearly."

Pimp C was paroled in December 2005 and promptly issued a solo album, Pimpalation, in 2006. It was certified gold.

He then got to work with Bun B on a UGK album. The 26-track Underground Kingz showcased a barrage of explicit lyrics, hard club beats and trademark Southern swagger. It also played up the duo's contrasting dynamic — Bun B's cool flow vs. Pimp C's more aggressive, animated rap attack.

The album's release was a point of contention between the group and its label. Underground Kingz was first slated for retail in November 2006 but was held up. It was released nine months later. Pimp C was outspoken about his irritation at the way it was handled.

"The record was going to be thrown out there to the wolves, and they ... really didn't care," he said in an August interview.

"Make no mistake — this record business is prostitution."

Rick Martin, UGK's manager, said Butler was looking forward to a new solo deal on Jive Records, a satellite radio show and a national cologne endorsement.

Pimp C is the second area rapper to die in the past few months. Kenneth "Big Moe" Moore died two months ago of a heart attack. Hip-hop artist John "Big Hawk" Hawkins was shot and killed outside his home in 2006.

"The situation is we have to step our game up," K-Rino says. "The people who die, their job is done. They're examples for the people who are still here. We have to see what a person's death can teach us. What adjustments we can make on our life to make sure we get the best quality of life while we're still around.

"My prayers go out to his family. We lost a true legend, but more than that, he had friends and a family, he had children."

Andrew Dansby contributed to this report.

Another RELEASE PARTY

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

You know you remembered how fun our first one was ;) this one is going to be even better so if you didn't make it to the last one, make sure you can make it to this one. The party will go on till well after 2 am!!!!

PS: It's also my birthday so if you see me, buy me a drink!
PSS: remember all the free shit we give out (free LRG shirt, CDs, posters, beachballs- ALL IN ONE BAG and we gave out like 300+) so imagine what we got for this next party.

YEEEEEEEEEE

GO READ A BOOK!

I was in serious need of a new brain stimulation. I was getting sick of all the music I was exposed to lately... so went to the book store and picked up a book. "This Is Your Brain On Music," by Daniel J. Levitin is the perfect book.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I really suggest this book for anyone that's either in need of a new good reading or because you are curious about the deep connection between your brain and music. Even though I'm not done with it because something always comes up and I can never finish it (I'm more than half way though) it's so amazing how our brain makes sense of music.

I looooove going to concerts and shows ... something just makes me feel so good when I'm listening to good music out loud, blaring in my ears and now I know why. The loud music goes into your ear drums then processed in your brain almost like a drug. Because all of the neurons in your brain are firing off all at the same time; trying to figure out the vibration, tone, beat, tempo, etc- it feels good to your brain.

Anyways, go read it for yourself and be as fascinated and as informed as I am :)

Fashion Shoot

I am so freakin excited for this upcoming Stash issue that's going to MAGIC in Vegas. The fashion shoot and spread is my favorite one so far. Even though it was so damn difficult to finalize the shoot but it FINALLY got done.

The models (Crystal Gervacio and Manny Casanova) were such troopers, Jen Tamez was the photographer, Jenny the make-up and hair, Nino (extra guy help) and me made it happen.

Submissions

WHAT IS GOING ON?? Does no one knows what "submissions/press kit" means anymore?

When people ask me "how do I get a write up in the magazine?" Well the answer should be obvious right.. send me a submission. I'm very open to checking out new music and new artists. But when you come to me with a very cocky attitude (and yes, I know the difference between cocky and confident, I can also usually tell within the first 5 minutes of talking to you if you're worth talking to or not) and expect me to "show some love" just because... then you're crazy (if this makes me a "hater" then so be it).

Please understand that we do not; sell front covers (buy the back if you really want a cover- it's the front depending on how you hand out the mag), sell write-ups, give out pictures before that issue comes out (the photos are NOT free, these talented photographers need to eat too), we won't make you look bad in an article unless you did it to yourself, and we don't last minute interviews because you cornered us.

So back on the submission topic, go to WWW.STASHONLINE.COM and get all the info there, send the press kit, and voila :)

OH and just in case you don't know what a press kit is, it should consist of; your bio with a picture (please don't hand write the bio), CD or some sort of sample of your music (good presentation is always a plus), send it in an envelope, follow it up with a phone call or email so we can put the person to the package.

Ok, no more bitching from me. But one last thing, who is as excited as me for the next Stash issue??? 4th issue, did you read that? 4TH ISSUE!!!

For Entertainment Purposes Only

A couple of days ago I received a myspace message from an old acquaintance. Interestingly enough, it came out of nowhere and I have no idea why she was so annoyed, especially since I haven't heard or spoken to her for a year now. Anyways, read it for yourself and laugh with me.

Arlene,

Quite a few of my contacts have been associating myself with STASH magazine and I want you and Nino to make it absolutely clear from now on that there is no association whatsoever. I work for Rolling Stone, The Source, and Mass Appeal, and my contacts have been linking me to a magazine that - although strongly mimics the intellectual property of that I vastly contributed at Ruckus - is not a caliber of "journalism" I stand behind. Hopefully, you can take care of this and not require me to personally contact those who have mentioned your name in conversation in the past year-and-a-half of STASH's conception. If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call.

Krish

So to Krish, here is STASH's response to your message.

Dear Ms. Krish,

Thank you soo much for the email. Nino and I totally agree. We have decided that we will remove the cardboard cut out of you and your way cool hair out of our board room. We will also take your name plate off the door that we pretended lead to your office. We will also remove your photoshopped picture out of STASH's annual Xmas card. In addition, we will also have to ask for your half of the best friend necklace back. Unfortunetly if you don't "work" for us anymore, we can't be best friends anymore. I mean dream of what it would be like if a journalist of such caliber really did associate with STASH. Someone JUST like you! I mean you say "vastly"! Please feel free to tell the millions of people we told that you associated with us in addition to us being best friends forever that we are indeed not associated and the wedding is off.

I finally came out of my denial

Nothing is perfect. On my way back from Antioch's suburbs I was soo hesitant to come back to the Fog City. BRRRSKEEEEEZZ!!!

I have soo much love for this city, we had such a great relationship so far. From the amazing eats, to the parks, venues, bars, museums, beach, shopping everything. So it's sad for me to finally accept it's BIG, FAT, obvious flaw. The Sco is a TEASE!!! Make me all hot one day, and makes me think that the summer is finally here, then the next day it's back to cold and windy.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

note- so yea it looks nice in that picture above, but it was windy as fuck.

It really brought me out of my long awaits of beautiful warm summers in Frisco (I was in a denial for years). So say buh bye to my stash of shorts, short skirts and flip flops and hello to more jeans, closed toed shoes and this new thing I just picked up, ALLERGIES.

Top 8, Covers and Write-Ups

Myspace top 8 is apparently the thing that everyone wants nowadays. Why? What's that gonna do really? Instead of messaging me about Top 8, work on making your page more informative.

Honestly when people send us messages, I usually give you a chance. I take a peek and see what you're all about. But usually it's nothin but pictures of naked girls and youtube videos of yourself doing nothing relevant to your music. The key thing is to make it easy for other people to navigate your myspace.

Hire someone to do a bio for you (need one, let me know I'll refer you to someone that can help you), if you got money, hire a PR company to help you. Don't waste your time calling magazines asking for write-ups, just go do your job (make quality music!!!).

Trust me, when you're the shit and is "the next thing to blow up" the press will come to you. We will hear your "buzz" if you really do have one. No need to buy a write up, buy an ad instead, that in itself will get your name out there. See this is why we offer a great package for independent artists (email me about it if you want to know more about it). We can't and won't sell front covers and write ups. For us, credibility is a very important thing.

And when I do call to schedule an interview with you, please don't tell me that you won't do it unless it's for the cover. That attitude will not get you very far.

To me visuals is one of the most important thing in a magazine. It's the first thing that catches you when you see a magazine or when you're just flipping through one. If you see something interesting, you read it (of course the writing is also very important). Photographers should always be credited for their work.

If you think about it. Writer's write, rappers rap, thats your hustle so you should be credited for your work, music and art.

I was reading XXL yesterday, and I was very excited to see an article on Mistah FAB. The visuals is one of the best ones in the magazine I thought (especially cause the pictures are the pictures that Vivian Chen took for STASH for our first issue).

I was looking for her name in the photo credit and I couldn't find it anywhere. Then, I looked at other articles and was surprised to see that NONE of the articles have a photo credit (this was online at www.xxlmag.com by the way).

(even though Shemp did touch the picture... it's still Vivian Chen's photos.)

No Apologies

I guess my "missing posting" really caused some shit. I didn't take it down because I'm going back on my words or because I'm apologizing. It WASN'T a personal attack on their character or them being an artist, I did it because I saw something that was shady and I wanted to call it out. The Bay Area is an underdog and we have to stick together if we want to make it to a National Level.

To purposely understocked a major release will hurt everyone, because that is what every other Bay Area released will be judged upon.

I never meant to threatened a person's job, but obviously if you are concerned about what I said ... then maybe you should change what you're doing. From the response that I received from industry people, this is a common knowledge and I'm just the person that called it out.

So to end this fuckin thing, what was said was said, we all know it's the truth, I don't hate you, but shit like that fucks up the Bay Area Rap scene for everyone.

* sidenote

this was the only comment I got from the "missing post"

"wow..its obvious your sorry attempt to get buzz for your magazine and your writing has only exposed how unprofessional you are. This statement is untrue and is a written act of defamation. Your lack of knowledge on this issue is obvious, there are no suporting evidence and concrete facts. This is pathetic. Obviously, this is a personal attack. Nobody needs you to be on a cover or even cares about your pathetic attempt for attention. I really feel sorry for you. I guess the only way to bring attention to your pathetic career is to slander others with your fairytales. As a writer, you are a shame to the hiphop community. Exposing public figures and slandering their character to bring attention to yourself is disgusting and shameful. You wouldn't know the truth if it hits you in your face. What a wannabe! Why don't you take a full evaluation of yourself and figure who you are before slandering others. Its obvious you abuse your role as a writer and this only exposes your stupid pathetic ass. When you write about real, live people you expose yourself to legal liability. If I were you I would watch what I write. - Lady L"

I wonder who wrote that, hmmmmmmmm? :)

What do you know about your Hip-Hop buyer

If you think that your Hip-Hop buyer is just a person that picks up a certain amount of your CD for a store, than you need to be further informed.

Let me just break it down for you, I won't say names and I'm not tryin to talk some shit or even start something. I just want to put this information out there because this is what really happens, and people need to know.

As we all know, the Bay Area really only have a limited amount of stores that you can get your CDs sold at. Tower used to be a BIG place but now it's gone and is greatly missed. Amoeba is great store, but it's not really Hip-Hop... so other than Moses Music, and a couple other mom and pop stores, the only one left is the one with 7 stores. With locations in Berkeley, San Lorenzo, San Francisco, Newark, Campbell, Pleasant Hill, & Vallejo.

What people don't seem to know is that a Hip-Hop buyer at a big chain store have a lot of power and can manipulate things, especially if they are also an artist(yes, I said IF to be vague, even though there really is one. I can't believe how many people in the music industry that doesn't know this information).

They could...

1. Release their album the same day as a bigger project, with a reason of "using the buzz of a bigger project" or "since there will be a lot of foot traffic coming in" but then buy a small amount of that bigger project so that it will be sold out and people then have a higher chance of buying their album instead (or even worse it could be "lost" for a confinient amount of time).

2. Get artists to get on their own personal projects with threats like "If you don't get on my album, I will pull all your CDs off the stores."

3. Tell magazines that if you do a write up on them that they will help with your "distribution and store placement," even though this is not something they deal with.

4. Pretend like they are helping an artist by telling them to do in-stores in more locations and they will double the order of their CDs. Well "double" sounds great and all but if double is only 3000 units, then they are still fucked.

5. And since they also have to talk to other distribution companies... I'm sure you can use your imagination.

So with all that being blogged about, hope you find this information helpful.

PS: sorry man, I just had to... and no I can't give you that cover.

"Hip-Hop Planet"

2 and a half issues into Stash magazine, I came to a realization that I have something to say and share with people.

So here I am blogging, something I said I would NEVER do. I guess sitting infront of the computer from 9 am to 2 am everyday is not bad enough for me.

First I want to start my blog with an article that I found very interesting. In this months National Geographic, there is an article called "Hip-Hop Planet," a story written by James McBride. I love it so much because he wrote this article from a personal point of view of a middle-aged man that didn't really like Hip-Hop, but came to a realization that Hip-Hop is a culture that is taking over the world.
